There is obviously nothing better than actuall in-country immersion for learning a language. This package, however, is the next best thing. Clear and easy to understand (and navigate), I find Topics language learning software ideal and recommend it to my students.

This item is easy and fun to use. It has a variety of ways to learn and games to test your knowledge. I would recommend this product to anyone that wants to learn French for vacations and travelling.

This is a pretty good refresher course if you’ve had French in high school or college and haven’t used it since. But that’s not the reason I got it. I got if for my son, who is seven. He’s into video games, Star Wars and Sponge Bob.
At first he thought the course was kind of boring, but with a little encouragement, me going through the lessons with him, he was soon trying to impress me with what he’d learned and how fast he was picking it up.
And that’s just not fair, you know, that children can pick up a language so much faster than adults. I’d give my eye-teeth if I could learn as fast as him. This course was a good fit for my son and me. We work well together.

I just purchased this and tried to run it on my relatively new MacBook (Intel Core 2 Duo)
First – I think I got unlucky and Level 1, Disc 1 was BAD….(more on that later). But beyond that, I must say the program did not impress me.
I tried Level 1, Disc 2 next – this program ran, but only used the middle 6″ of my 14″ screen. This disc contained flash-card vocabulary and “memory” style games. I kind of liked the memory style games – where it would speak the word “frog” in french and then make me find the frog… But flash cards?
Next, I tried level 2, Disc 1. It used the whole screen, but the first game appears to be videos of someone reading phrases to me in english and then french, with no interactive component at all. You can choose to record your own voice (if you have a mic) and then play it back… but that’s about it.
I like the Rosetta stone program much better – I was very quickly listening to phrases and trying to understand what was happening in a scene. I bought this, simply because I lost my level 1 disc and Rosetta Stone is ridiculously expensive. One frustrating part about these programs is that you can’t copy this to your hard drive or make a copy of the CD (it’s protected). Thus you’re stuck with a spinning CD, which lowers laptop battery life.
Onto my technical trouble with disc 1….
Trouble began soon after I inserted Level 1, Disc 1 and launched the program. On a mac, the actual program does not get ‘installed’ in your Applications folder, but simply runs from the CD. After starting it initial runs an “optimizing for your system” step, but after 20 minutes of my CD-Rom making a thrashing noise, and no progress being made on the progress bar, I forced it to quit (the program was not responding)
The second time the program ran, it got passed the “optimizing” part without trouble. But when I ran the “Easy Game”, the program would speak one word in french and then pop up a “SuperTalk Error Number 140: Can’t understand time arguments” error. I tried this several times and it did not work.
Maybe I got unlucky and got a bad disc…. Ugh.

I have been using this program for a week now and am totally into it. It’s actually fun and amusing. I was debating buying Rosetta Stone for a few months but was nervous to spend that much money without knowing what it was like. I thought for $20 I will give Instant Immersion a try and can say now, that I would definitely pay more than $20 something dollars. It really works and is helping me remember a lot from the french lessons I took a few years ago. I have a MACbook and unlike the other review I can say that I have had no problem with this program. I have tried using workbooks and lessons and flash cards for quite some time and none of it is as effective as this has been in a matter of days.

Had exact problem as F.I. two comments above.
FIrst optimizing went on for 20 mintues, I forced quit, then rebooted with no problem began program and after first french word got the error message: “Supertalk Error Number 140: Can’t understand time arguments.
Have to continuously press cancel and go to next word when it is repeated.
Will continue to try it to see what happens.
