what is the best way to really pick up french, besides being surrounded by the language everyday?
im taking classes at school etc, but would you say writing out french sentances/words, speaking it whenever possible etc?
what has helped you with the learning of a language?

buy cds with french songs that you really like – french records of Céline Dion perhaps, or Patrick Fiori, Jean-Jacques Goldman. Try to sing with the singers, download the lyrics and bit by bit you get used to the sound of the language and the mechanisms of pronouncing the words. TV is good. Whenever you can watch a dvd with french language do it and use the french subtitles parallel.
Bon courage!

Two top tips for learning French fast, effectively, and actually remembering what you learn:
1. get Byki! It’s a free language learning program for over 70+ languages- and they have French, naturaly. I know because I’ve used it and I gotta tell you its awesome. It will supplement your classes like nothing else.
You learn fast, you remember what you actually learned, and its a fun/addicting way of doing it. My favorite part is that Byki remembers what words you have trouble with and helps you out with them!
2. use it use it use it. My suggestion is to check out LiveMocha. It’s like a myspace for people who are interested in other languages. It’s there that you’ll find people who speak French and want to learn English- your perfect match! You’ll hear, be corrected, and encouraged by native speakers!
