@acberg1 – “Être” among other verbs (faire is one of them as well) doesn’t behave as the regular verbs. So it does mean that you only need to learn the basic form and then the endings will be the same as the other verbs.

The fact is that with the imparfait we have to put the “ai” suffix, that’s why I think It’s better to say “étais”, “était”,… because of the “être” prefix, which is “êt”.
