French students have to take and pass Le Baccalaureat (or le bac) which is a difficult and specialized test in order to go to a university or directly get a degree. The bac is taken at the end of lycee which is like a high school for French students and has different subjects.
Lycees are three years and colleges (which are like middle schools) are four years.
The grade number goes down as you approach the final year. So you start off secondary education as grade 6 and the year you graduate is grade 1.

Many schools in France go to school six days a week, with Wednesday and Saturday being half days. I did an exchange with a school in Amiens, and it did not do the six day system, but instead, a five day, where many students would stay until 5 or 6 at night. They usually go from September to mid-July, but their counterparts to our winter breaks, spring breaks, etc. are much longer. That’s what I know from attending a French school.
