There are several reasons why someone might wish to learn a second language such as French. Some do it just for the joy of broadening their horizons, and some do it out of necessity. Here are a few common reasons. See if any of them might apply to you.

1. You might have family or friends that were born or raised in France, or in a French speaking area of the world. Being able to communicate in their own language with them will definitely help them feel more at ease in what may be a new and unfamiliar environment for them.

2. Maybe you are planning a trip to France. Learning at list a few key words and phrases can go a long way in making your holiday more enjoyable. Plus, most people are very pleased when a visitor makes an effort to learn their native language and tend to be both more receptive and more open to them.

3. As the world becomes a smaller place, many people find themselves working closely with someone from a different country. Learning their language can do wonders for communication at work. It will help you to more precisely exchange ideas and instructions which will do wonders for job efficiency and effectiveness.

4. Wow! You have just been transferred to Paris. Wouldn’t that be exciting? This would be a “must learn French” situation for you. Try to imagine all the little things you do in your normal everyday life. Now try and imagine not being able to talk to anyone when you are doing them. Even the smallest thing such as stopping by the grocery store to get bread and milk take on a whole new complexity if you can’t ask simple questions.

5. Do it for yourself. You can learn French just for the sheer enjoyment of experiencing something new. A new challenge such as learning to speak French keeps you on your toes and lets you know that the old brain box is still working. Spending as little as 30 minutes a day can put you successfully on your way.
