i’m trying a couple different ways. like, i’m using coffee break french (the podcast) and i bought a game for my ds called my french coach. i also downloaded a bunch of pdfs and i have a dictionary for french slang. i keep a journal and write down the things that are hard for me to remember.
i go in and out of actually wanting to do it. for like a week, i’ll be really excited about it and run around screaming in french, but then i get bored and i’ll drop it for another week. when i come back to it, i find that i’ve forgotten a lot of the things i just learned.
i know that ultimately i’m just going to have to buckle down and force myself to do it even when i don’t want to, but do you have any suggestions to make it easier?
This website has questions in French, so you can read some of it, and maybe answer one. Lots of major websites have French versions such as amazon.com. If you read a magazine, see if it has a French version, such as People or Vogue. The most compelling reason to learn a language is to talk to someone, so if you see a person who is speaking French in public, say "bonjour" or something to him or her and see if they reply. You could have a brief conversation, learm about a visitor here, and feel proud of yourself later. One more idea is to find and try to listen to French music.
How did you get started with something you don’t want to do – is it a school requirement? Tell yourself you can do better than just learning the basics, and participate in something where French is spoken. You will become more fluent than others, and you can say things like "real French people actually say …"!

Is moving to France an option?
I did a year’s exchange trip to Germany and it really helped my German improve.

Go to a country that speaks french i.e. Canada.
Be the one who actually experiences how difficult it is to go around somewhere with a limited means of communication.
If that does not motivate…I dont know what will.

THE BEST WAY TO REALLY LEARN A LANGUAGE IS TO SPEAK IT WITH PEOPLE THAT UNDERSTAND YOU. It is also the most interesting way. Repeating what you hear on a tape is pretty boring, but who doesn’t like talking?
FIND OTHER PEOPLE WHO SPEAK FRENCH AND TALK OFTEN.
Form a group of people that are dedicated to learning French and try hanging out a couple times a week. Spending time with these people will be much more interesting than learning by yourself. Many people will learn faster too!

I hated french class and now in college I still do…the only thing that motivated me was wanting to get a good grade and show it to my parents for their approval. Now in college the only thing motivating me is for every A I get on my tests they send 100 bucks for my tuition. Which means more of the money I earn goes to booze.

Dear Libby,
Learning a language can be fun and challenging. While learning the language, you can learn about the culture of the people speaking the language. You can spend hours just learning about a different culture. Along with learning about culture and language, you enjoy watching documentaries about places you’d like to visit. Travel documentaries, aren’t just about fun places, you might actually learn something by watching them. It’s a good way to pass time, which will produce end results that are productive.
Good luck!!!

Watching French erotic movies? It could be a way! My point is that you need to be interested in learning French. Doing things that make you desire it more will help you want to learn it. Watch movies in French, attend classes, or even study abroad.

My name is Frederic, I am french, living in Paris and teaching French to foreigners.

I would say that most important for you is to keep improving yr knowledge of French while keep learning cultural fatcs-datas about France. Learning a language is fine but going beyond the language is for me a very important key point.
Thus, I have created one year ago a website dedicated to teaching French and at same time discovering Paris and all cultural events happening in this city.
Lots of audio files are Free including our monthly NewsLetter.

Hope those lines were helpful to you.
Once again, courage ( keep the Faith ) and……enjoy your interest for French language and Culture !
