I really need to learn French, and I go to school in Montreal.
Its an english school, but I dont want to fail my whole year of French.
I dont really want to look for a tutor, and I think I could do just fine learning the language by myself. I have all the resources.
Which way should I proceed on learning French?

Well, Resources such as books are not enough, since you will have A LOT of difficulty pronouncing the words without a french person teaching you how. Unless you get one of those Computer softwares that teach you french like Rosetta Stone…VERY Quick way of learning french…. but its 500 dollars or something

Try speaking french each day, ask your parents to go along with it (if they know french themselves). Watch more french shows, an hour or two a day will be good, if you don’t have french channels, go on youtube. And finally read french books, but small small ones. Each time you don’t understand a word, look it up in a french-english dictionary and memorize what it means. Reread until you fully understand it without the dictionary then move on to another book thats a little bigger than the last. Even french comics are helpful but are usually pretty expensive. Just try to add some french in your life and you’ll get better.

The French in Action program is very good. My school (college) uses it. It’s comprised of books, audio recordings and videos (which you can watch online for free). I’ve tried the Rosetta Stone program and while it’s decent for learning the names of objects, it’s a very poor program for learning sentence structure / grammar rules and I think it’s best used to supplement another method of learning. Bonne chance!

You should look for a tutor. That’s a good way. You must not copy from anybody, and spend time on it.

read french books, it really isn’t as hard as it sounds
try:
le petit nicolas
They are great books, and they are actually really funnny, and if you find it hard you could buy the english version on amazon or in a bookshop.
also, get the tapes to improve your listening and if you know any french people try and hold a convo with them, and get them to help with your speaking skills.
also…. you may find you’re gonna have to sit down and learn stuff to get good results, it may be boring but it will be worth it in the end!!!
good luck!!!
