Most of “linga …
Most of “linga franca” was inspired from portugese, it was use in betwen arabs and europeans of that time to communicate. Arabs believed they spoke french and european believed they spoke arabic when using it…so unless you’re a middle-age-arab you know that “linga franca” wasn’t french but mostly portugese….

If you look through history I think you will find that the French only want to be considered “allies” of the British when they want somebody to come and liberate them. They have the same attitude toward the Americans.

@105km-Somehow …
@105km-Somehow Norman the Lionheart isn’t quite the same – Richard the Lion Hearted Norman, maybe? I thought he was French. He spoke French, but English was still considered a ‘vulgar’ peasants dialect at that time, which indeed it was.Travellers spoke French or Latin – ‘lingua franca’ can mean ‘universal language’ although literally it was the ‘French tongue’.These days the ‘lingua franca’ is English, but don’t say anything to the French about it. Richards brother, King John, spoke English too.

Now a million British people live in France. They share similarities in language the English-language being partly French. Being a British ally for almost as long as the Portuguese.
